Thursday I was called at work by my step-dad Ray. He was to get me on Friday and take me to Iowa. My grandma was in the hospital and it didn't look good. She had a bad case of pneumonia and when we got to the hospital at 1am on Friday she was on 100% oxygen, as well as morphine, some anti-anxiety medication, and others.
My grandma has multiple sclerosis. She has had it for 34 years (it will be 35 in October). She has been paralyzed from the neck down ever since I can remember. Instead of a yearly cold or flu, she gets pneumonia. Its just this time was worse than the others.
My mom, who works in the medical field, was/is driving herself crazy. She has done research on MS and found that people that have the illness (on average) live for 35 years. I'm not sure this has helped my mom if only for the idea that an end would not be unexpected.
When I got to the hospital she was put on comfort care, which means no more feeding tube, no more intravenous therapy, just oxygen and pain killers. While we stayed at the hospital with grandma she did get better, being put on 80% oxygen. I, I am not sure how to feel about it, all I know for sure is that if the worse does happen at least I got to see her again.
Since coming back home I've heard that grandma has gotten better still, 60% oxygen and her left lung is all clear.
